As the Humane Rescue Alliance prepares to evacuate its Northeast facility this week, the animal welfare group is waiving many adoption fees through Wednesday. There are more than 100 animals available for adoption.
“We are in critical need of adoptive homes,” Claudia Roll, vice president of operations at the Humane Rescue Alliance, said on the organization’s website. “We have so many wonderful animals in our adoption centers who are waiting to meet their new families, and we want to send as many of them home as possible.”
The New York Avenue facility is evacuating for aggressive pest control, Samantha Miller, media relations manager for Human Rescue Alliance, tells DCist over email. “The building will be safe for animals and people on Thursday morning, when we’ll resume business as usual,” she says.
Until then, Humane Rescue Alliance is searching for homes for the dogs, cats, and other animals being evacuated.
Animals up for adoption are already neutered and microchipped. Animals who aren’t adopted will either be moved to HRA’s Oglethorpe St. NW facility, placed into foster care, or spend the night with a staff member, per Miller.
While working on the pest problem, Humane Rescue Alliance has requested donations of blankets, sheets, and towels. The organization has already received great support from donors who, according to Miller, have filled their lobby with boxes of donations.
“We are grateful to our community who have risen to the occasion to support us.” Miller says.
Humane Rescue Alliance’s website lists available animals, and the organization has two adoption centers: 71 Oglethorpe Street NW (12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday) and 1201 New York Avenue NE (12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday).
