A teenage boy was shot and killed Sunday night in Southeast, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. He is the 13th juvenile homicide victim in the District of Columbia this year, an MPD spokesperson said.
Police from the Sixth District heard the sound of gunshots around 10:20 p.m. on Sunday. Officers found an unconscious teenage boy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 4600 block of Hillside Road SE. Emergency responders transported the boy to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the police account.
The boy was identified on Monday as 17-year-old Shaquan Buggie of King George, Virginia.
His death marks the 13th time this year that a minor was murdered in D.C., according to data from MPD. The Washington Post was the first to report on the boy’s death.
The youngest child murdered this year was 11-year-old Karon Brown, who was shot by an adult man on the 2700 block of Naylor Road in July. Police arrested 29-year-old Tony McClam in the murder, which police sources have said was related to conflicts between children around who was allowed to sell cookies and Gatorade on the corner of Naylor Road and Alabama Avenue SE.
The last teeanger to be murdered in the District was 15-year-old Jaquar McNair of Southeast, who was stabbed on an Orange Line train in October. Police have arrested a 15-year-old girl.
Last year, thirteen juveniles were homicide victims in D.C., an uptick from seven in 2017, according to MPD data. The District has experienced 149 total homicides this year, up from 143 this time last year.
