A Whole Foods Market will anchor the forthcoming development at Walter Reed.
The Army medical center that stood on the Georgia Avenue Northwest site for more than a century shut its doors in 2011, and the District paid to take over 66 of the property’s 110 acres.
One of the initial (and much anticipated) plans for the Walter Reed site included Wegmans, another grocery chain, as an anchor, but the city opted for a proposal from Hines Development and Urban Atlantic instead. (Wegmans lovers in D.C. need not despair too much—the store is making its District debut at a development at the old Fannie Mae headquarters on Wisconsin Avenue NW.)
Whole Foods signed a lease to take over 40,000 square feet of space on the property, which is reportedly the largest development currently underway in the quadrant. The planned community is called the Parks at Walter Reed, and includes three phases of construction, two of which are already underway. The grocery chain will be a part of the third phase, alongside 323 rental units, 32 of which are considered affordable units, and a total of 58,000 square feet of retail. (The other phases included 89 condos, 301 apartments, and 18,000 square feet of retail.)
Construction on this third phase is slated to begin in early 2020, with a hopeful end date of early 2022. When it opens its doors, it will be the sixth Whole Foods in the city—not counting the shuttered Glover Park location, which remains closed as the courts decide whether its rodent infestation is an “act of God.”
