When Gov. Ralph Northam lifted restaurant capacity caps by moving Virginia into Phase Three of reopening on July 1, and Mayor Muriel Bowser officially moved D.C. into Phase Two on June 22, plenty of restaurants across the region began welcoming diners back to their tables under the newly relaxed guidelines. 

“Restaurants are a very thin-margin business. But we have to open somehow,” Ashok Bajaj, owner of Rasika and founder of Knightsbridge Restaurant Group, told DCist in May. All 10 of their restaurants have reopened for indoor dining by mid-July. Several had already reopened for patio service. “It’s going to be a balancing act.”

Even so, not all restaurants in Northern Virginia or D.C. are jumping into in-person dining again, preferring to either maintain takeout service or remain closed entirely.  

Here are the local restaurants that have reopened for any kind of dining: indoor, outdoor, takeout/delivery. You might see some names that were previously on this list have disappeared; many of these restaurants are temporarily closed for a number of reasons, whether out of caution, from damage due to the protests that began over George Floyd’s killing or just to give their staff a break. We will be updating this list regularly as more restaurants choose to reopen.

We are overhauling this page to reflect the growing number of reopening restaurants and have relisted them by location in addition to alphabetically. Watch this page; we’re still making updates. This page was last updated on July 29.
