Virginia saw its largest number of new coronavirus cases in more than a month on Friday.
The commonwealth tallied 943 new cases of COVID-19 this morning, the highest count since June 7 and well above the seven-day moving average of 648. There are 68,931 known cases of the virus in the state.
The Virginia Department of Health tells DCist that “new cases are rapidly increasing in the eastern region” of the state. The department did not answer exact questions about what might have caused the jump.
Virginia has continued easing restrictions in recent weeks and moved to Phase Three of its reopening plans on July 1. Northern Virginia officials have warned residents to be cautious despite the further reopening. For now Maryland and the District have opted to remain in Phase Two.
Virginia also recorded 21 deaths on Friday, which is on par with recent numbers, raising the death toll to 1,958 fatalities. The state’s positivity rate stands at 6.3%; it has wavered around that number since the end of June.
Compared to mid-June, deaths are trending down in Maryland, steady in D.C., and up a bit in Virginia. In total, 5,829 people have died in the three jurisdictions.
The District also saw a jump in cases Friday with 64 new infections. That’s fewer than the 73 new cases recorded Wednesday, but otherwise the highest count since June 12. Wednesday’s spike was the city’s highest number of new infections in almost a month.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed the earlier uptick at a press conference Wednesday, saying factors like visitors from areas with high infection rates, large protests and demonstrations, more people going back to work, and an increase in testing all “have a big impact.” Two days earlier, D.C. Health Director Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt said no observable coronavirus spike could be attributed to protests up to that point.
There were no new deaths in the District Friday; 568 people have died in all.
D.C.’s positivity rate stands at 2% as of July 2, the latest day for which data is available, and is broadly trending down with a few spikes. The city wants to see a positivity rate under 10% for seven days, among other things, before further reopening.
Maryland recorded 463 new cases of the virus today, slightly higher than its seven-day average of 421, bringing its total to 71,910 known cases.
Another 15 people have died, bringing the state’s toll to 3,303 deaths in all. Continuing its steady downward trend, Maryland’s positivity rate now stands at 4.34%.
Spooked by a slight uptick in cases, on Thursday Anne Arundel County joined Montgomery County in implementing one of the strictest mask mandates in the region. It requires people to wear masks in outdoor public spaces when social distancing isn’t possible. D.C., Virginia, and Maryland only require masks to be worn in indoor public places.
