Montgomery County indefinitely canceled coronavirus testing at all its county-run sites after inspections by state and federal officials revealed improper lab procedures that affected test results.

According to a spokesperson with Maryland’s health department, officials were notified of a complaint regarding AdvaGenix, the Rockville-based company that the county partnered with to administer COVID-19 tests. An inspection into the company revealed “pre-analytic deficiencies” and improper procedures that may have affected as many as 17,254 tests.

Over the past two months 19,000 AdvaGenix tests have been administered — accounting for 8% of the county’s total tests, according to county officials.

All county-sponsored testing sites are closed until further notice, and individuals who received a test at one of the sites in the past two weeks should be retested at a different community location, according to Montgomery County officials. The state will supply Montgomery County with at least 5,000 test kits a week to make up for the shortage, according to a health department spokesperson.

The closing comes after the county announced the immediate suspension of its testing program with AdvaGenix on Thursday, and initially closed four different sites, according to NBC 4.

The county’s contract with AdvaGenix, which began in late May, was expected to boost the county’s testing capacity by the thousands. Yet by early July, officials still worried that the county could not meet the testing needs that a surge in cases would require.

The county holds the second-most coronavirus cases in the state, behind Prince George’s County, with a total of 18,819 cases as of August 14. It leads the state in testing, with 193,677 residents tested, about 18% of the county’s total population.
