Several events are planned on Saturday to remember Deon Kay, the Black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a D.C. police officer on Sept. 2. There will also be protests and marches against police violence.

The shooting occurred just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the 200 block of Orange Street SE in Congress Heights. According to MPD, officers arrived at the scene after seeing four people in a car live-streaming on Instagram with guns.

Protestors gathered Wednesday night and Thursday morning outside a police station and at Mayor Muriel Bowser’s house, calling on the mayor to fire Police Chief Peter Newsham.

Ballou STAY, the high school Deon Kay attended, had planned a “gathering for those we’ve lost” on Friday, but it was postponed “due to both COVID health concerns and a unknown scheduling conflict,” according to Principal Cara Fuller.

Here are some of the events planned in D.C. on Saturday:

3 p.m.: A weekly march by DC Protests calling for the defunding of police, starting at Malcolm X Park. “Even after being shot with rubber bullets, tear gassed, beaten, and pushed to the brink we are still out here, occupying OUR streets,” DC Protests said on Instagram. “We will not give in to police violence or fear tactics.”

4-6 p.m.: The Party for Socialism and Liberation DC is holding a “Speak-out Against Police Terror” protest at MPD’s 7th District station, 2455 Alabama Ave., SE. Protestors will “call for justice for Deon Kay, an end to racist police terror, and an end to police occupation of DC’s Black communities.”

6 p.m.: Black Lives Matter DC is hosting a vigil for Deon Kay in Congress Heights, at the corner of Mellon St. SE and Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE.

7 p.m.: The TheyThem Collective is planning an “FTP March” starting at Dupont Circle. “Out of respect for SE, until we are asked to cross the river we are only going to make noise in white gentrified neighborhoods that help finance these pigs patrolling and killing black and brown communities,” the group said on Instagram.

Ongoing: Moms Against Fascism is hosting a “chalk-in” for Deon Kay on Saturday. “Chalk-in or create some art wherever you are to show that we are here for Deon and we demand accountability.” the group said on Instagram. “Don’t have chalk? Make a sign!”
