The Smithsonian Institution has announced reopening plans for two more museums on the National Mall.

The National Museum of American History and the National Museum of the American Indian will open their doors to visitors on Friday, with new safety measures and reduced hours in place. The American History Museum will operate 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays through Tuesdays, and the American Indian Museum will operate 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

The announcement follows on the heels of the Smithsonian’s last wave of reopenings: The National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum all reopened last Friday.

All of these museums have been closed since mid-March. Smithsonian officials say the museums will have reduced days and hours of operation.

Allison Willcox, a spokesperson for the Smithsonian, said visitors will need to reserve free time-entry passes to visit most locations due to the pandemic.

“Because we do have a smaller capacity in order for us to maintain social distance and keep people safe, we don’t want people lining up outside,” Willcox said. The time-entry system “allows people to plan their visit and allows us to have some control over how many people will be entering the museum throughout the day.”

Time-entry passes are needed at all museums, except for the Renwick Gallery. The museums are also following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines including prohibiting groups of more than six visitors, requesting those who are sick not enter, requiring anyone over the age of six to wear a face covering,  and implementing safe social distancing guidance.

Museum shops and cafes will not be operating, and all on-site public tours and events are suspended.

The Smithsonian started its wave of reopenings in late July with the National Zoo, the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. and various gardens. So far, none of the Smithsonian openings have resulted in the spread of COVID-19 to visitors or museum staff, Willcox said.
