The District has given 428 restaurants, bars and retailers grant money to winterize their outdoor dining setups.

The D.C. Mayor’s Office of Nightlife and Culture announced Thursday that it’s awarded $2.6 million of the $4 million available for this purpose. Each restaurant could get up to $6,000 for tents, heaters, propane, lighting, furniture and advertising. Several other restaurants have applied and are waiting for approval for the rest of the $1.4 million in grants.

Restaurants across the country are bracing for a tough winter. Diners visiting winterized restaurants utilizing outdoor dining due to the coronavirus may be less likely to want to go out to eat with cold temperatures.

Here’s a map of the grant recipients.

Only one grant was given in Wards 7 and 8. D.C. officials say only one restaurant in those wards, Sala Thai, asked for the grant.

“Businesses have been reimagining their outdoor spaces to increase seating capacity, and we have been working throughout the pandemic to cut red tape and provide funding to support this hard-hit industry,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a September news release when the project was announced.

“The Streatery Winter Ready Grant program will keep our outdoor spaces open and more employees at work,” Bowser said. “We encourage residents to continue supporting local restaurants through both in-person and take-out/delivery options.”

About 625 restaurants received temporary outdoor dining permits, according to data from late September.
