Update: An FBI agent shot a man aboard a Red Line Metro train in Maryland Tuesday morning, Metro spokesperson Ian Jannetta confirmed with The Washington Post. The agency had previously just referred to it as an “agent-involved shooting.”
Metro released further details on the shooting Friday afternoon, stating that based on video footage from the train, “it appears that an FBI agent discharged his weapon several times following a verbal exchange with a passenger.”
Per Metro Transit Police Department’s account of the incident, an adult male approached the agent as the train car neared the Medical Center Station. Following a verbal exchange, the agent fired multiple shots. Both the victim and the agent then exited the train at Medical Center, according to the report.
The victim, an adult male, “is currently in stable condition, and there were no additional injuries,” Jannetta told the Post. MTPD’s latest release confirmed that the victim continues to be in stable condition.
The Silver Spring Justice Coalition, a local social justice group, has called for more transparency from the FBI — and other law enforcement agencies across the region — which declined to share key details, such as what led to the shooting, or the identities of the agent and victim.
The coalition said it was “angry at the lack of transparency in this shooting in Bethesda. We expect our local leaders to raise hell about the failure to disclose the circumstances of this shooting. What does it say when the federal government can come into our county and do whatever they want with no accountability?”
Metro Transit Police, the FBI and the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office are still investigating the incident.
Metro Transit Police Chief Ronald Pavlik Jr. said in a statement Friday afternoon that the department is “committed to transparency and releasing as many fact as we can without compromising this criminal investigation,” adding that the department expects to issue further updates on Monday.
