FRIDAY APRIL 30

THEATER: Encore (kind of). In March, the Young Playwrights’ Theater and Howard University debuted their web series Silence is Violence: The Future of the Field. On Friday, the team behind the production (Autumn Angelettie, Ayanna Fowler, and Jaucqir LaFond) are back for a live Q&A. Friday’s event will be held on YPT’s YouTube channel. (7:30 p.m.; FREE)

BIKES & BITES: This weekend, join Phoenix Bike’s bikes Arlington Treasure Hunt by exploring your new favorite Arlington eateries — all by bike. Participants receive a guide to each restaurant, and have the opportunity to collect clues (for prizes!) and learn new facts about the neighborhoods. Pick the 16-mile route, the five-mile route, or for the especially hearty, you can try both. Routes are open from Friday through Monday. (Arlington, Virginia; $0-$35)

SATURDAY MAY 1

COOKING CLASS: On Saturday, expand your cooking by attending an online cooking class with AbueNica (a Virginia organization created by Nicaraguan grandmothers, to provide assistance to forcibly displaced Nicaraguans) and KAMA DC (a volunteer-led non-profit building building immigrant community). The organizations will be hosting a class with Anna (Anita) Wells, a grandmother of 10 “with a wealth of knowledge of how Nicaraguan dishes showcase the country’s history.” (12 p.m.; $5-$20)

PUPS AND PINTS: It’s dogs and brews (and you). Pups & Pints is an outdoor festival with food trucks, beers, and an off-leash dog park. The event is free for all participants (2-legged and 4-legged), but donations are encouraged to benefit the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. (1820 Dolley Madison Blvd. Tysons; 12 p.m.-7 p.m.; FREE with donations encouraged)

SPRING AFFAIR: This weekend, (virtually) celebrate the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington’s 40th year with their Ruby Jubilee fundraiser. The virtual Spring Affair will be hosted by Tony Award-winner Alan Cumming and will feature entertainment and a silent auction. (7 p.m.; FREE, with VIP options available)

FILIPINO FOOD + SOUL FOOD: Mark the start of AAPI Heritage Month by heading to the pop-up Cooking with Friends for Friends with Pogiboy and Bon Appétit. The event will benefit NaFFAA Capital, which works to empower Filipino Americans across the region through actions including advocacy and community events. (Pogiboy; 12 p.m.-9 p.m.)

IT’S NATURAL: Spend part of your weekend with Capital Nature as they host an event in partnership with the weekend’s City Nature Challenge. The challenge (where residents of different cities compete to spot the most wildlife) technically starts virtually on Friday, but you can join in the fun in-person at Oxon Run Park on Saturday. Get ready to look for wild plants, fungi, and other organisms that call the District home. (2 p.m.-4 p.m.; FREE)

SUNDAY MAY 2

GRAIN FAME: Get your inner foodie out. On Sunday, Bold Fork Books is hosting a book talk with Jonathan Bethony (Seylou’s head baker and co-owner) and Roxana Jullapat, author of the new Mother Grains: Recipes for the Grain Revolution. The conversation will unpack the tricks of taking on modern cooking with ancient grains. (3 p.m.; FREE)

ZOOLOGY & FAMILY EQUALITY: While we patiently wait for the National Zoo to reopen on May 21, there are still ways to engage with our favorite friends in the animal kingdom. This weekend, celebrate International Family Equality Day by tuning into their lineup of livestreams: naked mole-rats, elephants, giant pandas, and more will receive “special enrichment.” (10 a.m.-3 p.m.; FREE)

SKETCH SHOW: Unwind on Sunday with a (virtual) show. Virginia comedian Von Mychael is hosting a standup and sketch show — all from the comfort of your home. Be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time; participants will be emailed a Zoom link an hour before the show.  (7 p.m.-8 p.m; $5)
