JAZZ FEST: Soothe your ears with smooth jazz this Friday at the Capitol Stage Jazz Fest, which features four local musicians. Saxophone player Tony Craddock Jr. and singers Neika Simone, Marcus Johnson, and Chan Hall will take the stage and fill Capital Turnaround with their mellow melodies. CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: Whether you’re 12 or 82, Cirque du Soleil will probably make your jaw drop. The award-winning circus company is back in the D.C. region with KURIOS: Cabinet of Curiosities, a show in which an inventor unlocks a door to a world of wonders, from which otherworldly characters emerge. DEAD HORSE COMEDY SHOWCASE: Laugh your way into the weekend with Dead Horse Comedy Productions’ Comedy Showcase. The comedy group has teamed up with Crystal City Sports Pub to showcase local talent once a month. Find locals Ray Jubela, Steve Tracy, Sam Cobb and Maura Feiner, along with visiting comedian Casey Bauer, at this month’s show. (Crystal City Sports Pub; 8 p.m.; $15+)
MOVIES IN THE PARK: The DMV is so full of outdoor summer movie options that it can be easy to miss them entirely. “I’ll just go to the next one!” you insist, and summer’s over before you know it. Avoid that fate and head to Virginia Highlands Park this Friday to watch The Lego Movie. The screening kicks off the National Landing BID’s Movies in the Park series, which runs through September 16. OPEN STREETS/TASTE OF WARD 7: Break out the skateboard, roller skates, bicycle, or just your legs. Open Streets, a D.C. government initiative, returns to Benning Road NE this weekend. The city will shut down the blocks between Minnesota Avenue NE and East Capitol Street NE, and open them up for people to ride around and enjoy interactive programming like free yoga and a go-go performance. An food festival, Taste of Ward 7, will coincide with Open Streets, bringing offerings food trucks and Ward 7 restaurants for purchase along the corridor. (Benning Road NE; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; FREE)
CITI OPEN: It’s tennis season in Rock Creek Park. The annual Citi Open kicks off this weekend and runs through August 7. Casual tennis enjoyers can get tickets to single sessions, while more serious enthusiasts may want a full tournament packages. Grab your tickets while you can — one Miss Venus Williams has accepted a wildcard spot in the tourney, and her Citi Open debut may make them a little harder to nab. (William H.G. MADE IN ARLINGTON: See art, buy art and maybe wear art at this summer market, hosted by Arlington Arts Center and Made in Arlington featuring the county’s artists and artisans selling their works and crafts. TRASH PICK UP: Some environmental advocates argue that parts of the Anacostia River are clean enough to swim in, despite D.C.’s ban on swimming in it. You can help make it even cleaner this Saturday, when the Earth Conservation Corps and the Nice to Meet You! Podcast team up to pick up trash from the river, a bi-monthly occurrence. GAME DAY: Dive into the world of indie games this weekend at the annual SAAM Arcade celebration. Eight independent game developers will present their creations, united under the event’s theme of Color, Line and Form. 730 DAY: This 7/30, hang out with the folks behind 730DC, the newsletter that wakes up Washington with the latest news and happenings. They’ll be celebrating their birthday at metrobar with drinks, food, and a DJ. Don’t worry, it doesn’t start at 7:30 a.m. (metrobar; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; FREE)
DANCE IN THE DMV: Everybody will be dancing in the REACH this weekend at Dance in the DMV. The event series has celebrated Black dancers in the D.C. area all week long, and culminates on Saturday with a full day schedule that includes an arts market, a panel on the future of Black dance in D.C., performances ranging from African dances to cabaret, and a dance party for all. NADA SURF: A Nada Surf show would be worth the cost of a ticket to the Black Cat or 9:30 Club, the sorts of venues the band normally plays when they visit the region. This weekend, though, you don’t need to shell out anything to see Nada Surf perform. The witty alt-rock band is playing in Herndon for free as a part of the Music at Arrowbrook Park summer concert series. (Arrowbrook Centre Park; 7:30 p.m.; FREE)

AFRO-LATINO FEST: Downtown Silver Spring hosts the Afro-Latino Festival Sunday to celebrate the rich and varied heritage of the Afro-Latino community. Expect food, vendors, salsa and samba dance lessons, and performances by salsa band Zeniza Allstars, Dominican bachata band Yo Soy Chanel, Reggaeton artist Gabbedon and others. NICE JEWISH BOY PAGEANT: Who will be crowned the next Mr. Nice Jewish Boy of Washington, D.C.? Head to Union Stage this Sunday to find out. Local drag queen Venus Valhalla hosts the competition, and will crown winners with their sashes — and a $250 drink ticket to Pitchers. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Keshet, a grassroots organization fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ Jewish community. (Union Stage; 4 p.m.; $30+)
