Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther suit from the 2018 Marvel film will go on display next year at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The costume is a part of their upcoming exhibition, “Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures,” which goes on display in March.

The museum acquired the suit in 2018, along with other items from Black Panther, including a script signed by director Ryan Coogler. It briefly went on display during a special event that fall, but this March is the first time the suit will be on the museum’s floor for an extended period.
Boseman starred as the titular Black Panther in the Marvel franchise. The Howard graduate died from colon cancer in 2020, two years after delivering the commencement speech at his alma mater. The school has since named its College of Fine Arts after the actor, and offers a scholarship in his name, funded by Netflix.
This week, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premieres, with fans waiting to see who will take on the titular character’s mantle.
The NMAAHC’s exhibit will explore Afrofuturistic art, music, activism, and more with objects like Nichelle Nichols’ uniform as Lt. Nyoto Uhura on Star Trek, Octavia Butler’s typewriter, and musician Nona Hendryx’s spacesuit costume as LaBelle.
But the exhibition will extend beyond pop culture. It is also meant to be a space to elevate stories of Black liberation and social equality. Another object of note is Trayvon Martin’s flight suit, representative of his aspirations of becoming an astronaut. Martin was fatally shot in 2012, and his death was a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement. “Trayvon Martin’s flight suit tells the story of a dream of space flight ended tragically by earthbound violence,” Kevin Young, the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the NMAAHC said in a statement.
“Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures” will be on display in the Bank of America Special Exhibitions Gallery from March 24, 2023, through March 2024.
