The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in downtown D.C. opened in 1972 and was modernized and reopened in 2020.

If you’re looking for a place where you can curl up with a book and also scream on a dance floor, it does exist. This summer, look no further than the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library for that experience.

The MLK library is hosting multiple free concerts on its rooftop garden featuring local music groups throughout the summer. There’s Go-Go on the Rooftop, a concert series this June in celebration of Black Music Month. The series will take place on every Sunday of the month, opening with Sirius Company, followed by Rare Essence and Black Alley, and closing with Crank Caviar.

And from June through August the D.C. Punk Archive will also be on the rooftop garden for its annual summer concert series. The D.C. Punk Archive, a project which formed in 2014, has been building collections within the People’s Archive related to the local punk music scene. The concerts, sponsored by MLK Library Friends, began in the library’s basement to celebrate the project’s launch. They recently were moved to the rooftop after the MLK Library underwent renovations.

Michele Casto, a librarian one of the co-founders of the D.C. Punk Archive, says the archives and concerts are not just a “nostalgia project,” but a way of celebrating local music past and present.

“It’s our way of saying D.C. music alive is well,” Casto told DCist/WAMU. “D.C. punk is alive and well.”

For people who aren’t interested in the concerts and just want to get some peace and quiet, Casto says the library will probably be large enough on the concert days so you won’t hear too much noise from the inside. But the evening of June 7 may be quite eventful: in addition to the first concert of the punk series, the library will be hosting an opening reception around the same time for the Black Music Month Exhibit.

In the event of rain, a concert will take place in the MLK auditorium instead. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed.

There may also be merch for the punk concert series this years — the details for that aren’t quite finalized. In past years, concertgoers were able to get DIY merch, D.C. punk archive shirts, and posters.

There is no ticketing system for either concert series, and Casto says they have never had to turn anyone away yet because of capacity issues. The library does not have a ticketing system for the go-go concert series, but some of the performers, like Rare Essence, have RSVP links on their official websites.
