Where Are the Local Colleges in the NBA?

Last week the Wizards signed former GW forward Mike Hall to a 10-day contract, making him the second Colonial from last year’s team to make it to the NBA. The first was Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who scored the first points by a GW player in the NBA since Yinka “the Stinka” Dare in 1998. Neither look to play much this season, but it got us thinking – where are all the other players from local colleges?…

Trouble for the Terps?

Looks like things aren’t going so well for the Maryland men’s basketball team lately. Yesterday Fox Sports headlined an article “Terps could be in ACC cellar next season” after a series of calamities up the Green Line. Earlier this year starting guard Chris McCray failed out of school, and just recently seniors Nik Caner-Medley, Travis Garrison, and Sterling Ledbetter all withdrew from school without finishing the semester, presumably to pursue pro careers. The Examiner’s…

College Hoops: Conference Tournaments, Day 2

Though ranked sixth in the country, George Washington has been characterized as an overrated team. Given the opportunity to prove that their 26-1 record and 18 game winning streak wasn’t just a house of cards, the Colonials instead folded, losing 68-53 to Temple in the first-round of the Atlantic Ten tournament. The loss is not only disappointing and gives fuel to the team’s critics, but it likely cost them a couple of seeds in…

GW Pulling Away in the A-10

This entry was written by DCist contributor Hayden Alfano Playing as they do in the poorly-regarded Atlantic 10 conference, George Washington is often overlooked when the conversation turns to D.C. hoops, particularly since they play in the long shadows cast by Georgetown and Maryland, two successful programs in the nation’s “power” conferences. But the Colonials may just be the best the area has to offer. With an 81-62 over Rhode Island on Saturday, GW ran…

McCray Ruled Ineligible For Terps

This post was written by DCist contributor Hayden Alfano Maryland’s men’s basketball team took a serious hit Monday with the announcement that senior shooting guard Chris McCray has been ruled academically ineligible and will miss the rest of the season, thus ending his career at Maryland. McCray has captained the Terps each of the last two seasons, and with 15.2 points per game, was the team’s leading scorer. He’s also one of the team’s few…

Local Hoops Roundup

Without a doubt, the highlight of the Maryland Terrapins’ up and down (Clemson says “Hi”) season last year were the two wins the Terps enjoyed over their hated rivals, the Duke Blue Devils. Their rivalry resumed last night in Durham and the Devils enjoyed the cozy confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium to the tune of a 76-52 walkover. This one was over early (letting everyone tune over to ABC for the new episode of…

For Maryland, It Was A Very Good Day

Maryland’s mens soccer team won their first national title since 1968 and shook off three years of frustrating losses in semifinals of the College Cup with a 1-0 victory over the University of New Mexico last night in Cary, NC. Senior Marc Burch, a transfer from Evansville, found the back of the net in the 31st minute to give the Terps the lead and freshman goalkeeper Chris Seitz all but sealed the deal in…

George Washington Does Not Fear the Turtle

This entry was written by DCist Sports newest contributor, Hayden Alfano George Washington made its case as the best team in the area last night with a 78-70 win over Maryland in the BB&T Classic. After a sloppy first half in which the teams seemed to be feeling each other out, Maryland’s Chris McCray hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers in a span of 45 seconds to tie the score at 51 and keep the Terps close….

Weekend Hoops Roundup: Maryland v. Duke Edition

>> The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team has just five losses in the last 11 months, and after falling to Maryland 99-92 in OT on Saturday night, Maryland can lay claim to three of them. Maryland’s victory marks the first time in a decade that the Terps have taken the season series from the Blue Devils. Emotions were high in College Park throughout the game. JJ Redick got into it with Chris McCray and…
