Looks like things aren’t going so well for the Maryland men’s basketball team lately. Yesterday Fox Sports headlined an article “Terps could be in ACC cellar next season” after a series of calamities up the Green Line. Earlier this year starting guard Chris McCray failed out of school, and just recently seniors Nik Caner-Medley, Travis Garrison, and Sterling Ledbetter all withdrew from school without finishing the semester, presumably to pursue pro careers. The Examiner’s Rick Snider called it “like spitting on Testudo on the way out the door.” Their early departures mean Maryland doesn’t get credit for their graduations, which are counted in an NCAA formula to determine if a school loses scholarships. And on top of that, heralded recruit Jeff Jones has withdrawn his commitment to the school and top recruiter Rob Moxley, who came to Maryland in 2005 after working at UNC-Charlotte for five years, has left to go back to Charlotte.

But on the bright side, junior Ekene Ibekwe just withdrew his name from the NBA draft and will be coming back, and DJ Strawberry said he’ll do the same. And taking a page from Georgetown, which brought in the son of their succesful coach John Thompson, Maryland just brought in Lefty Driesell’s son Chuck to replace Moxley. The younger Driesell was an assistant at Georgetown for two years and coached Alexandria’s Bishop Ireton High School last season. And the team has some other recruits coming in, but will it be enough to avoid a third straight NIT tournament?
