The total is more than 10 times the initial estimate provided by Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s office.

The announcement from the former Virginia Speaker of the House is just the latest in recent weeks from a list of veteran Fairfax County legislators who will not be running for re-election .

“More Democrats across the nation should study how she did this,” said one expert of Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s win in Virginia’s 7th congressional district.

In a nutshell: tax relief, a boost for schools, a mental health crisis facility, and even a new state park.

A number of new laws will take effect around the D.C. area in the new year, including a jump in the minimum wage and a plastic bag tax.

Virginia Republicans will be gathering for an unassembled convention, and will use ranked-choice voting to pick their gubernatorial nominee from seven candidates.

Northam cited Virginia’s need for an experienced leader to combat the long-term impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s not enough for us just to be seen,” Del. Mark Keam said. “It is critical that we pass our views and our viewpoints into the law.”

Gov. Northam urged Virginians to “take this seriously,” following the announcement.
