Sometimes you just need pizza. And even though Pizza Hut’s bipartisan pizza deal may seem tempting, you know that sometimes only wood-fired will do.
This weekend, we found ourselves at Two Amys (3715 Macomb St. NW in Cathedral Heights) not once, but twice. (Once for dining pleasure, the second as a reward for helping a friend move out of his apartment. Yes, we’re pizza gluttons.) But we can’t help than notice that some local ratings for best pizza have unnecessarily ranked Two Amy’s lower than it should be. (But DCFoodies had it in August’s Top 5.)
In the Post’s Best Bets survey, Pizzaria Paradiso is ranked as the No. 1 place to get a great pie and Two Amys was third, following Faccia Luna, which to DCist’s knowledge is no longer in business (at least in Glover Park). The Washingtonian doesn’t even have Two Amys ranked. We know people’s pizza preferences vary, but we think we’re pretty on the money with our opinion of Two Amys. Neapolitan-style pizza may not impress every pizza lover, but we’ve been hooked for a long time. On top of its pizza choices and changing specials (we had an Etna and a special pie with chantarelles and pancetta), be sure to sample some of Two Amys’ cheese and meat antipasto (we had pecorino toscano and prosciutto). And the Marsala custard for dessert is somewhat sinful.
According to Slice in New York, Two Amys is one of only a handful of restaurants in the U.S. that has official certification from Italy’s Verace Pizza Napolitano Associaiton. Two Amys is always crowded, so be prepared to wait. Don’t have a car? Take the 30, 32, 34, 35, 36 from the Tenleytown or Foggy Bottom metrorail stations. Or take the 90 or 92 bus from the Woodley Park or U Street metrorail stations and disembark at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Macomb Street.
