Get ready, because the D.C. City Council just got a bit more interesting. Former Mayor Marion Barry, scorned by most of the nation but a cult hero to Anacostia, trounced current Councilmember Sandy Allen, 61 percent to 23 percent (16 percent went to other candidates) to recapture his old Ward 8 seat.
As Barry’s political stock soared, Harold Brazil, an at-large councilmember, tanked. Plaged by corruption allegations and confronted by a strong newcomer, Kwame Brown, Brazil’s 14-year tenure on the council is coming to a close.
Carol Schwartz, the longtime Republican at-large councilmember, had no problem keeping primary challengers at bay.
The Post frames the results like this:
Disgruntled voters in the nation’s capital appeared to be ousting three veteran members of the D.C. Council today, voting by overwhelming margins to replace the incumbents with two fresh new faces and a familiar old one — former mayor Marion Barry.
And it is certain that the former mayor, who celebrated his win at his headquarters near Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X avenues, is going to be the wildcard in council politics. Nobody on the council wanted him back in the first place. DCist is sure that with such a notorious figure on the council, there will be greater attention to council politics in the months to come. Barry has previously said that he doesn’t care if nobody likes him on the council, for he’d be the strongest voice for the people of Anacostia at the city-level.
What’s your favorite Marion Barry memory or quotation? DCist’s is: “Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country.”
