DCist is in awe of the power former Mayor Marion Barry has in this city. All he’s done is cleared the Democratic primary hurdle (he still has to be “elected” on Nov. 2 and won’t take his Ward 8 seat until next year) and he’s now influencing major policy.

The Post reports that the major powers trying to bring baseball to Washington are pushing to get the deal worked out and through the current city council before Barry and two new councilmembers (who have criticized public financing for bringing the Expos to D.C.) take office.

On Wednesday, District officials met with baseball higher-ups for 12 hours at a Georgetown law firm and “explored the logistics of moving the Expos to Washington in great detail.” It would take about three months and about $13-15 million to revamp RFK Stadium to serve as a temporary home for the Expos. Baseball officials also met for 2 1/2 hours the day before with the team trying to pull the Expos to Virginia.
