More Fallout from Georgetown Fire: 3318 Prospect St., the site of a fatal fire over the weekend, had numerous safety violations, fire investigators tell the Post. Windows had metal bars that were padlocked, there weren’t any smoke detectors, exits were blocked. In the meantime, a number of units managed by the Student Housing Association (which is not affiliated with the university), have been declared unsafe for occupancy. The SHA has posted signs in its buildings telling occupants to not let housing inspectors in.
Not Photogenic: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia got feisty with some photographers at an event hosted by the National Italian American Foundation, snapping “that’s enough,” to one Associated Press photographer who attended the public panel discussion, and “vigorously gestured” that another should cease shooting.
Scalia got into a whole host of trouble earlier this year at a public event in Mississippi when he had federal marshals to erase the recordings of reporters covering the event. Scalia’s actions were found to have violated the law.
Victory for AU Agitator: Ban Ladner, the president of American University who isn’t necessarily widely worshiped by his students, has lost his bid in arbitration to get a student website, benladner.com shut down. The Post reports:
But the arbitration panel, while describing Ladner as a noted educator and scholar who has published and spoken widely, said the AU president’s name did not have trademark protection. Nor, the panel found, was the domain name being used in bad faith or for commercial gain.
Meth Labs Busted: The AP, via the W.Times, reports that the number of meth labs discovered by police is up this year. 75 labs, mainly in rural counties, have been busted this year.
Briefly Noted:
— Police continue to search for a kayaker who was last seen Tuesday after becoming separated from his boat in a particularly tricky part of the Potomac near Great Falls.
— The ashes of former U. Maryland assistant football coach Dick Redding have gone missing from his son’s car during a trip to spread his ashes around the country.
— And if there are any Yankees or Red Sox fans who weren’t watching television last night, Boston beat New York.
