Taxi Strike Called for Today: A taxi work stoppage we reported yesterday has been called today by a taxi association to protest legislation proposed by Mayor Anthony Williams which would increase the regulation of taxis in the district, and explore the use of meters in some cabs. The strike was called for 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. today, but it is unclear how many taxi drivers will participate. The Post observes: “The District’s cabdrivers have opposed numerous attempts by city officials to abolish the zone system, which dates to the Depression era.”
Checkpoints Return to Capitol Hill: If you thought the abrupt removal of checkpoints from Capitol Hill a little less than one week ago was too good to be true, you were correct – the checkpoints are back. The W. Times and the Post report the decision, which drew harsh criticism from D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton as “outrageous” and “cosmetic.”
