The organization ReDefeatBush is sponsoring a rally at the U.S. Capitol at noon today they’re calling “Defend Democracy, Support the Challenge.” A variety of liberal organizations have been calling on U.S. Senators to join the Representatives who are planning to launch an official challenge to the November election results, and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer has agreed to object to the results to trigger debate. Official counting of the Electoral College votes begins at 1 p.m. today. The rally will be held at the Upper Senate Park at Constitution Avenue.
The organization said in an email sent today they anticipate the protest to be covered by C-SPAN, NBC, and other organizations. The confirmed speakers include Granny D, Green Party Presidential candidate David Cobb, and lawyers and officials from Ohio. From the press release:
“We hope people will stay as long as the challenge continues,” said ReDefeatBush founder David Lytel, “whether that turns out to be several hours or several days.” Participants are invited to bring flashlights and candles so that the vigil may continue after sunset if the challenge has not yet been resolved.
The organization is also planning to hold a variety of events the weekend of President Bush’s second inaugural, which include a “stage,” a free shuttle service between counterinaugural events with Old Town Trolley, public restroom facilities, and also a “massive” CounterInaugural Ball at the D.C. nightclub Dream for $30 or $60 depending on if you’re above or below 30 years of age.
