FRIDAY:
>> The D.C. Independent Film Festival continues tonight at the City Museum with themes including “Cinema of the Surreal” and “Scary Movies.” Discussion with the filmmakers take place after the screenings. We posted more information about the festival last week.

SATURDAY:
>> Into old things? Then boy, oh boy is this weekend for you. First off we’ve got the Washington Antiquarian Book Fair, held at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn, where you can purchase antique and rare books, manuscripts, maps and more. Then out at the Dulles Expo Center, there’s D.C.’s Big Flea Market, where you can buy everything from classic lunch boxes to art deco jewelry. Read a blogger’s account of last year’s Big Flea here.

>> In our opinion it’s never too early to start celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, so head on over to Alexandria for the Old Town St. Patrick’s Day Parade at 12:30 p.m. Other events starting earlier in the morning include a classic car show, a dog show, bagpipes and bands.

>> At the Meyer Auditorium at the Freer and Sackler galleries, George Mason University assistant professor Robert DeCaroli discusses his book, “Haunting the Buddha: Indian Popular Religions and the Formation of Buddhism,” which will take a close look “at early Indian spirit-religions and their contributions to Buddhism,” according to the Freer Sackler events calendar. 2 p.m. Free.

SUNDAY:
>> The New York City Ballet is in town at the Kennedy Center. Listen Missy posts an enthusiastic review of her experience watching the show. Today performances are at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.; tickets will run you from $47-112.

>> Want to know more about obesity? Post medical reporter Susan Okie will be at Politics and Prose at 5 p.m. to discuss her book “Fed Up!” and an Institute of Medicine study on how “overweight kids face a range of preventable illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes and depression.”
