Married Gay Couples Can File Joint Taxes in D.C.: District of Columbia Attorney General Robert J. Spagnoletti has ruled that “Validly married same-sex couples may file a joint DC Form 40.” The decision was made as the result of action by a couple married in Massachusetts. Mayor Williams has yet to decide if same-sex unions will be recognized in D.C., as city leaders fear intervention by the Republican-controlled House.
Professor Theft at GWU Resolved: George Washington University has reached a settlement with the government over $1.8 million of federal research money stolen by a former professor, who faces a prison term of three or four years.
$1 B For D.C. School Infrastructure: D.C. Councilmembers Adrian Fenty, Vincent Gray, and Kwame Brown have introduced a bill which would provide $1 billion for school repairs. Critics are skeptical of the trio’s plan to pay for the repairs with income from the D.C. Lottery, pointing out that D.C. already has a large amount of debt.
