The District’s plan to have Howard University own and operate a city-built medical facility to replace D.C. General Hospital near RFK Stadium in Southeast is running into some snags. Although a number of politicians and activists have said that Wards 5, 6, 7 and 8 are underserved in terms of access to medical care, some health interests have come out and said the new hospital isn’t needed and a reshifting of medical assets could threaten the survivability of other hospitals in the city.

According to Voice of the Hill, the D.C. Primary Care Association contends that instead of adding hospital beds the District should “use the money to better improve primary and ambulatory care in parts of the city where these types of services are lacking.”

An additional analysis obtained by Voice of the Hill, the Stroudwater Report, says that the D.C. General site is not “viable” and would “cause Greater Southeast Hospital to close and puts Howard University Hospital at risk.”
