Attention Tenleytowners or those who have in the past or are likely to raise a fuss over future development in the Wisconsin Avenue corridor. The District is holding a public meeting tonight to discuss the draft proposal to reshape the corridor. What does that mean? Potential mid- and high-density residential and commercial development on plots of land between Georgetown and the Maryland line that could be upgraded.
After a quick survey of the draft plan, we noted a few interesting things. First, up in Friendship Heights, the Lord and Taylor and its parking garage is mentioned, as is WMATA’s Western Division garage off Jenifer Street. Further down in Burleith, the Social Safeway on Wisconsin and the Boys and Girls club property off S Street are being examined. Exciting stuff for real estate developers and for community activists who are sure to throw in an obstacle or two, or three as any plan is implemented.
We hope that transportation is a major consideration in any action plan. Wisconsin Avenue, with troublesome left turns, and lack of metrorail access along its southern half, make bus service less-than-adequate. We think express bus service or bus lanes or something could be integrated to improve access on the 30s, the city’s longest crosstown bus route.
And DDOT, please do something about the Albemarle Street intersection! What do you hate about Wisconsin Avenue that you think could be improved?
