“Bard-37” … What does this phrase bring to mind? A punk band? A brand of malt liquor? A series of all of Shakespeare’s plays read in chronological order at a local Arlington playhouse?
All snark aside, option C is correct. Washington Shakespeare Company has been performing each of the playwright’s works as part of its Bard-37 Canon Cabaret. Tonight, they will read King Lear at 7:30 p.m. for just $5 at the Clark Street Playhouse in Arlington (about a half mile from the Crystal City metro).
Though the event’s been going on since March, some of the best plays are still to come. Over the next two months, the company will stage readings of Antony and Cleopatra (7/31), Macbeth (8/2), Pericles (8/7), Coriolanus (8/9), Cymbeline (8/14), The Winter’s Tale (8/16), The Tempest (8/21) and Henry VIII(8/23). But when showing up for a performance, you’ve got to take your chances; the company does not accept reservations.
So if back-to-back free renditions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream didn’t satisfy your summer Shakespeare fix, check out WSC’s readings, and don’t miss King Lear tonight.
