Bright and early this morning the 57th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced. Like the red-headed stepchild of the Oscars, the Emmys are a chance for Hollywood’s lesser starlets and stars to participate in their own self congratulatory fest. ABC’s campy but fun Desperate Housewives leads this year with 15 nominations. Viewers can look forward to a three way cat-fight between housewives Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, and Felicity Huffman for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. J.J. Abrams’ Fantasy Island/Survivor mash up “Lost” and NBC’s overrated and unfunny comedy “Will and Grace” earned 12 and 15 nominations, respectively. So where in this mess of Hollywood mediocrity is our We Watch So You Don’t Have To favorite, The West Wing? The NBC drama brings up the rear with a paltry three nominations — one for Best Drama, which we all know it isn’t, and two nods in the Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories, for Alan Alda and Stockard Channing.

Rather than take this time to reflect on the downward spiral of a once quality show, DCist prefers to look to the future of fake political dramas. This fall, gear up for the Geena Davis vehicle Commander-in-Chief, and the Jerry Bruckheimer produced The E-Ring, about life in the Pentagon. As any government grunt will tell, dramatizing the lives of D.C.’s policy and military wonks is going to be a hard sell.

The complete Emmy nominations list includes a few surprises, but it’s mostly old school TV fare. From this side of the TV screen, we can think of a few people who were overlooked (Jimmy Smits) and few pity nominations (Everybody Loves Raymond), but that’s just us. Your thoughts and speculations?
