You’re killing us, Tony, killing us.

In what may turn out to be the longest political cat-and-mouse game in District history, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams again spoke to the press about his ambitions for the coming year — and shed no more light on whether or not he will run for mayor than he has before.

Williams, speaking to Bloomberg News Service yesterday, slyly noted that his inability to improve District schools may well push him towards running for a third term. Speaking directly to rumors of his plans, Williams said of a mayoral run, “I am leaning that way, there’s no question about it.” District political types — well, those not on vacation — may well have jumped at the news, but as is standard fare with Tony, there is a question about it: “The mayor’s salary is not one of the world’s great salaries. I really don’t have any pension built up. I’m leading the charge with the low American savings rate. I would like to kind of reverse that.”

DCist has long followed this political tease — since March, to be exact — and yet Williams continues to string us along. When oh when will Tony make up his mind? More importantly, when will we stop taking each and every utterance as evidence of his future plans?

Update: Color this DCist stupid. The article in question actually said that the continuing failure of District schools may be pushing Williams against running. That’s a bigger story, and one that DCist will explore in depth next week. Until then, this DCist is off to face judgement at the hands of the powers that be for such an egregious error.
