Up and at ’em, Washington. “Early to bed / early to rise / makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise,” goes the saying. Well, two area initiatives are in healthier, wealthier positions this morning. First, City Administrator Robert Bobb has confirmed that D.C. will enter negotiations with Deutsche Bank for a stadium financing deal. The proposed package would apparently ease the tax burden placed on city businesses by giving the bank a piece of the revenue generated by the stadium.
Second, clever engineers have managed to cut 25% from the price tag of the proposed Metrorail expansion to Dulles. The estimate now stands at $1.8 billion, a number much more likely to meet the cost-efficiency requirements for federal funding.
We’ll leave debate about how wise these plans are to our commenters.
K St. DMV To Stay Closed: It’s now official. The K Street DMV office will be closed for at least the duration of next week. Some services have been relocated to the C Street office, ticket deadlines and payments will be postponed, and we can all stop hearing about this story for a precious few days.
Va. Judge Dismissing DUI Cases: NBC4 is reporting a story that seems likely to get bigger. Over the past two weeks District Judge Ian O’Flaherty has been dismissing many DUI cases on the grounds that the legalities surrounding breathalyzer tests put the burden of proof on the accused — which is unconstitutional. The story came to light due to an email sent by state troopers upset with the judge’s rulings. Stay tuned.
DCPD Officer Dies: Twenty-five year old James McBride became ill during a bicycle training exercise yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Washington Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death remains unknown pending an autopsy, but doctors suspect that overhydration is at fault. McBride had been with the force for two years; last year he was named the DCPD Rookie of the Year.
Briefly Noted: Kenilworth Avenue reopened… Oil dumped into D.C. sewers… Area tourism is booming… Census shows area demographics are shifting…
