Alexandria Power Plant To Close: A power plant on the banks of the Potomac river in Alexandria that has long antagonized residents may close in response to demands by Virginia officials that they cut the level of pollution emitted, the Examiner and Post report. Alexandria residents have long complained about the plant, which has left a grey film of pollution on cars and houses in some neighborhoods.
King Memorial Reaches Fundraising Milestone: The organizers behind a monument dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have announced they are nearly 1/3 of the way to a goal of raising $100 million for the memorial, the AP via the W. Times reports. Yesterday Washington Mystics owner Sheila Johnson and others attended an event kicking off a “Kids for King” campaign at the memorial’s proposed site on the Tidal Basin.
