Although most of us will be stuck indoors on the job, today will be partly cloudy with highs in the 80s.

Bush Nominates Harriet Miers to Supreme Court: We don’t usually cover national politics in this space, but as we compiled this news roundup the AP reported that President Bush has nominated White House counsel Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court. The announcement will no doubt mean many of you will have a busy Monday, preparing for more hearings in the Senate.

Fireworks Cause Panic: A massive fireworks display at the Kennedy Center ignited to celebrate the beginning of a month-long series of events celebrating the country of China caused panic across the city the Post and the Examiner report. The Saturday fireworks were designed by pyrotechnics designer Cai Guo-Qiang who referred to the display as an “explosion event.” Although this DCist was many blocks from the Kennedy Center at 9th Street Northwest, we heard the loud sound, speculating that perhaps the invasion was upon us.

Health Officials on Alert: Over a week ago, six sensors in downtown D.C. detected trace amounts of the naturally occurring bacterium tularemia. Although the strain detected was in small amounts and may be a variant that doesn’t impact humans, officials are not taking chances and are on the lookout for illness.
