Editor’s Note: This week’s agenda was compiled by DCist staffers Kyle Gustafson, Tom Lee, and Sommer Mathis.
This week kicks off at the 9:30 Club with a doubleshot of artists from Wales. One is legendary, one should be (and might be yet). One is proud of their Welsh heritage, one not so much. One has panties thrown at him on a regular basis, the other throws carrots at their audience on a regular basis.
Tuesday: DCist faves the Super Furry Animals bring their progged-out, pyschedelic pop to town behind their latest album, Love Kraft. Past tours have seen the band’s touring horn section dressed as nuns as well as the band themselves dressed as yeti’s. Supposedly on this tour they have glow-in-the-dark track suits. But here’s the catch, no matter what they’re wearing onstage, it never overshadows their music, some of the best that’s been made in the last 10 years. Here’s a show worth your time and money on a Tuesday night. Tickets are $15.
Wednesday: Legendary Welsh crooner Thomas Jones Woodward, better known as Tom Jones, comes to town and is sure to bring out a fabulous crowd, specifically people that can afford the $75 admission price. You could probably buy tickets for every act mentioned in this week’s music agenda and not spend that much money, but we digress. Expect a fair share of ties to be loosened while Jones sings old faves like “What’s New Pussycat” and “It’s Not Unusual”. Please note this show was originally scheduled for the 8th, but was moved. But fear not, all tickets will be honored.
Thursday: When punk ended, it seems like cities had a choice: keep the ethic or keep the energy. We picked door number one and a thousand humorless post-punk ships were launched. Baltimore took the road less traveled, and a glorious, ridiculous metal scene emerged. Come hear how things could have been as Bal’mer bands Medic and Flowers in the Attic come to the Black Cat. $2 buys an awful lot of rawk.
Charlottesville bands The Nice Jenkins (think pre-Smallville Remy Zero) and Truman Sparks (think more laid-back Q And Not U) should make for a good and varied show at the Velvet Lounge. The details are a bit in flux, though — we’re told that the original lineup (featuring WSC) fell through, so another local band may be added to the bill. Also, the ticket price is still TBA. We think it’s worth going to, but it’d probably be a good idea to confirm the specifics later in the week.
