A mid-week transit update, bringing us news on Virginia’s new governor and the possible extension of the Yellow Line.

Kaine Announces Support for Wider I-66
Wow. You’d think the guy would take a day off to recover from what we would hope was a late night celebrating, but Virginia Governor-elect Tim Kaine is already up and addressing one of the issues that most preoccupied the state’s voters over the course of the campaign — transportation.

In his first post-victory press conference, Kaine announced his support for both widening one side of I-66 inside the Beltway and expanding Metrorail service out to Dulles International Airport. Last week we noted that Republican candidate Jerry Kilgore had proposed widening I-66 in both directions inside the Beltway, a solution not seemingly convincing to a majority of Northern Virginia voters at the polls. Kaine limited his proposal to widening the westbound lanes, which would allow for faster evacuations of the District in the case of an emergency without risking opposition by development-heavy Arlington County.

Politics aside, all power to Kaine for being so on the ball with this governing thing. If DCist had been elected governor of Virginia, we’d still be downing beers and singing Queen’s “We are the Champions” in any bar that would have us.
