This weekend is not only the last of January, but the last of the Chinese calendar year. We had some lewd jokes about fireworks and “The Year of the Rooster” prepared, but given that our last attempt at ethnic humor almost ended with us being chased out of D.C., we’ll play it safe this time and simply wish you all a Happy Lunar New Year.
FRIDAY
>>The key to a vibrant local music scene is to go out and support it whenever and however you can. Well D.C., here is your big chance. Tonight at the 9:30 Club three of the best local bands around will be gracing the stage in what we hope is the first of many local showcases at the city’s premier concert venue. We’ve written about and gushed over the friends-of-DCist Bicycle Thieves and Cedars plenty of times (The Nethers too for that matter), so you should know what to expect when you see them in the live arena. DCist will be out in full force for this all-locals bill and we hope you will be too. Remember kids; don’t hate, participate. Tickets are just $10 and doors open at 9 p.m.
>>Forum Theatre Dance is offering a double-bill of untraditional theatre with “The Gas Heart” and “Hamletmachine”. The former is an absurd “language ballet”; the latter puts the Shakespearean classic in post-World War II Europe. Check them out at Warehouse Theatre for $18/$15 for students.
>>If Zola doesn’t deliver quite enough spy ambiance for you, stop by Goldfinger: A James Bond Party at Home on 911 F Street. open bar, free admission – all you have to do is R.S.V.P. online, and you’re one step closer to martinis, shaken, not stirred.
