Quite the sports weekend for the greater DC area. Something for everyone as they say.

We’ll start out at RFK with the DC United and NY Red Bulls match, for no other reason except that I was there with the pictures to prove it. Despite considering myself to be quite the soccer fan, I’m ashamed to say that this was my first ever United game. And when the Red Bulls scored twice in the first 18 minutes, I started thinking it might also be my last. But all was not lost. United hung tough through the end of the first half and were sparked in the second by Alecko Eskandarian, who put one in the back of the net 11 minutes after entering the game as a sub. Couple that with another goal by my new favorite player Facundo Erpen (best. name. ever) and the crowd was alive and kicking. The game ended in a draw, but all the United fans exiting the stadium were happy with the result after such a rough start.

The biggest game last night, however, featured two top womens teams going toe to toe. The result gave new life to the “Fear The Turtle” campaign as the Lady Terps knocked off the UNC Tarheels to advance to tomorrow night’s Women’s NCAA Final where they will play the Duke Blue Devils. As if the stakes needed to be raised in the Duke/Maryland rivalry. Will there be rioting if Maryland wins? Star duo Crystal Langhorne and Laura Harper led the Lady Terps with 23 and 24 points respectively.

Lastly, we would be remiss without mentioning that IT’S OPENING DAY! Time to put the tumultuos off-season behind us as Livan Hernandez takes the mound in New York against Tom Glavine and the Mets. Gametime is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. on ESPN. And if that’s not enough to get you excited, Tom Boswell says the Nats will have a new owner in two weeks.
