I’ve walked by the old Convention Center site recently, and there’s this weird artsy-looking walkway between H Street and New York Avenue. What the hell is it?

You’d be surprised how many emails we’ve received with this exact question. You’d also be surprised how a staff of writers and editors as big as our own could be so easily stumped. We had no idea. Until today. According to a press release from D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams’ office (which was probably swamped with the same questions), we learn the following:

Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced today that the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, in cooperation with the Washington Convention Center, has completed installation of Art Walk, a large-scale outdoor exhibition of twelve works by local artists on the site of the former convention center. Tied together by the common theme of Metamorphosis (a complete or marked change in appearance, character or condition), each thought-provoking work in the exhibition is illustrative of the changing nature of this center-city location. “Art Walk is an example of how art can transform the mundane into an exciting aesthetic experience,” said Mayor Williams. “It’s terrific to see casual strollers glancing up and often stopping to take notice and snap photos.”

Ahhh. We can finally put that query to bed.
