FRIDAY:
>> After a superb D.C. debut last year in the back room, Pleaseeasaur is returning to theBlack Cat tonight, this time on the mainstage, opening for San Diego’s Pinback. J.P. Hasson and his invisible sidekick Thomas Hurley III are apparently taking a break this month from recording a new Comedy Central-sponsored album to perform a number of valuable pubilc service announcements. Did you know, for example, that “Cobras are Totally Cool?” Or, for that matter, that “Strangers Have the Best Candy?” Pleaseeasaur is all about bringing you the skinny on how to stay safe and which businesses deserve your patronage. But they’re also about totally working out all the time! The sold-out show starts at 9:30 p.m., but craigslist may have the answer for you.
>> It’s time for another Hirshhorn AfterHours, this time in honor of the opening of Glasgow-based Jim Lambie’s contribution to the ongoing Directions project. Lambie will also be serving as guest DJ as his new work, including our very own groovy, colorful Zobop taped floor. At the Hirshhorn Museum from 8 to 11 p.m. The galleries will all stay open late, with a cash bar and music on the Plaza.
SATURDAY:
>> The Washington Ballet is finally back from a 5-month strike that canceled their run of The Nutcracker last Christmas. Choreographed by Septime Webre and resident choreographer Trey McIntyre, The Bach/Beatles Project is officially kicking off the ballet season at the Kennedy Center, replacing their originally planned Othello. The title pretty well sums up the concept.
>> Don’t forget about the Gypsy Eyes Records launch at the 9:30 Club. Shortstack, Brandon Butler, and Revival will play an early show, starting at 6:30 p.m., for $10.
SUNDAY:
>> New York-based performer and Village Voice blogger Eugene Mirman is mustering up support for his new DVD and comedy tour by taking a public stand against his biggest enemy — himself. Anyone interested in participating in a media stunt should gather at 5 p.m. in front of the Renwick Gallery, where you’ll be handed signs that read “God and Fags Hate Eugene” or “Bring Back the Troops and Send Eugene, He’s an Asshole.” Eugene himself will then lead the protestors to the White House to demand freedom from Eugene, once and for all. If you like your irony served up as big as a nuclear holocaust, you can then head over to Black Cat and fork over $12 to see Eugene perform with Leo Allen and Michael Showalter.
>> Can’t figure out what to do with Mom for Mother’s Day? Warehouse Theater is hosting their Mother-Daughter project, a series of three one-act plays that explore relationships between first-generation immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters, for only $10. That’s a heckuva lot cheaper than a champagne brunch. 3 p.m.
