Good morning, Washington. So… did you participate in Bike to Work Day? And wasn’t it surprisingly pleasant? We hope the answer to both questions is yes. Here’s one more reason to pick up the habit: yesterday WTOP reported that Metro will be replacing its old bike racks with ones that are more spacious and secure.
Wilson Bridge Dedicated: The Post paints the scene at yesterday’s Wilson Bridge Dedication ceremony. Governors! Giant flags! Woodrow Wilson’s Rolls Royce! And that most awesome use of taxpayer dollars, the Blue Angels. It all sounds great. Unfortunately, the bridge isn’t actually open yet — that’ll have to wait three more weeks. Even then, drivers probably won’t see much of a difference: the new span has the same number of lanes as the old (admittedly, it also has shoulder lanes that the old bridge didn’t). Real relief should come when a second span opens in 2008.
Funeral Arrangements Set For Second Fairfax Shooting Victim: It was eleven days ago that disturbed teenager Michael Kennedy began shooting in front of a Fairfax police station, quickly taking the life of Detective Vicky Armel. Sadly, the rampage now has two victims: Officer Michael Garbarino succumbed to his injuries yesterday Tuesday morning. Garbarino had shown signs of improvement, but his condition rapidly deteriorated in the early hours of Thursday. WJLA now reports that funeral arrangements have been announced, but are not open to the public.
Furniture Chain Bankruptcy Strands Customers: NBC4 reports that Mastercraft Interiors has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection — and that the settlement will put customers at the back of the line of creditors looking to recoup what they’re owed. Worse, according to a former employee interviewed on last night’s WTTG newscast, the stores’ management was aware of the coming financial storm for months, but did nothing to warn or protect its customers. The chain operated five stores in the D.C. area for nearly 30 years.

This Day In DCist: A year ago we lamented the loss of the N-A-Minit Mart, welcomed the newly-opened Radius Pizza and went looking for Fun Street.
