More details continue to emerge from the arrest, Saturday night in Miami, of Gilbert Arenas and Awvee Storey. Storey was allegedly blocking traffic and was subsequently arrested for refusing an officer’s request that he move.

It was then that our favorite, mercurial star rushed to his teammate’s defense, exiting his car and walking towards Storey in an attempt to stand beside him. Arenas was arrested after refusing to reenter his vehicle; he was charged with resisting without violence.

We are all for the ideals of solidarity and team-building, as well as the occasional worthy act of civil disobedience, but Arenas’ Gandhi-like intentions were belied by the following quote, made as the officer attempted to arrest him:

You can’t arrest me. I’m a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards, and I’m not going to leave my teammate.

Logical validity aside, the statement seems a bit presumptuous to us. While posting career highs this season in points and steals per game (29.3 and 2.0, respectively), and entrenching himself as a fan favorite in Washington, it’s safe to assume that in Miami, he hasn’t quite reached “I’m Keith Hernandez” status.
