It’s going to be a beautiful weekend, folks. Don’t spend it inside watching some lame soccer game (yeah, I said it). Get some sun, some exercise, and – better than that – get some art this Saturday. Go ahead, grab your roommate, your sweetie-pie, or hey, subvert the Hallmark Establishment by bonding with Dad on your own time, and set off on an art walk to our local galleries. A number of shows are closing this weekend, so take advantage of your last chance to check them out. Don’t worry, we wouldn’t send you out on the streets to fend for yourself, so here’s the plan:
First, hop on the Green Line up to U Street. This neighborhood has a lot more to offer than murders and…more murders. Oh relax, it’s Saturday morning! Much too early for violent crime, but not for great art. Take the 10th Street exit and make your way to Project 4. Laurel Lukaszewski kicks off her new show, Kuroi Shiroi, featuring a black stoneware and white porcelain installation inspired by traditional Japanese culture and the agricultural environment. (903 U Street, NW. Open 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
Next, turn back towards the metro and keep going until you hit 14th Street. If you’re already feeling hungry from your cultured travels, stop in one of the great Ethiopian restaurants you’re passing. Take a left on 14th and enjoy nature’s art for a second at the Garden District on the corner of S Street. Stroll a few more blocks and just after the local art-loving Viridian Restaurant’s outdoor patio, you’ll see a lovely green door that opens into three fantastic art galleries. Don’t be intimidated if it’s locked, just hit the buzzer and tell them you’d like to visit the galleries and they’ll usher you right in. Take the gigantor elevator to the third floor and start with the Steven Cushner and John Watson show at Hemphill Fine Arts.
