FRIDAY:
>> Mike Doughty’s band, which we assume will in fact include Mike Doughty, are taking the 9:30 Club stage tonight for a show that as of this writing is still not sold out. If you people need a reason to go above and beyond his music, allow us to present into evidence Exhibit A and Exhibit B. Oh, and Exhibit C: DCist’s awesome interview with him back in September. With Kevin Devine, 8 p.m., $17.
>> It’s a weekend for Baroque opera. Baltimore-based Ignoti Dei Opera company will give the first-ever New World performance of Cavalli’s La Didone (1641). $35 or $45, June 16 (Fri) and 17 (Sat), 8 p.m.; June 18 (Sun), 2:30 p.m. Fully staged performances, with Baroque orchestra, at the Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre, at American University. Also starting this weekend, Wolf Trap Opera Company‘s production of Telemann’s Orpheus (1726): $58, June 16 (Fri), 8 p.m.; June 18 (Sun), 2 p.m. Performances continue next weekend, too, in the Barns at Wolf Trap — which means air conditioning and no mosquitoes! (Charles Downey)
SATURDAY:
>> DCist will be at SILVERDOCS all weekend, cramming in as many screenings as we can before the festival wraps up on Sunday (Note to festival organizers: it’s time for SILVERDOCS to run longer! Many films are only screening one time. A little over four days just isn’t cutting it. Next year, extend it to at least a full week). On our agenda are Jesus Camp, Chairman George, Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?, and La Persona de Leo N. Check out the full schedule here.
>> New Orleans’ Hazard County Girls like to put on constraining corsets and high heels and tear up a stage like Bratmobile reborn. We say welcome to D.C. ladies, and more power to ya. At the Velvet Lounge, with Durga Temple, Year Long Disaster and Throttle Rod.
SUNDAY:
>> Take the opportunity to catch a matinee of Assassins at Signature Theatre, about which our reviewer has already warned: “If Assassins isn’t embraced with the same kind of fervor as Signature’s triumphant Urinetown from last year, DCist may have to resort to desperate measures.” 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., $50.
