Today we kick off “Buying Indie,” a new series about local and independent businesses written by Vince Wadhwani, the brain behind Buy Indie. Every now and then he’ll feature a new business, observing only one rule — it must be local, it must be independent.
You don’t often see soccer fans heading in groups to the hair salon, so at first the sight may seem strange. But then, just before they get to the door, they make a quick right, head down a flight of stairs, and disappear into Adams Morgan’s newest coffee house. 90 Minutes opened four months ago. Owner Jose Pachano says he is dedicated to “Good soccer and good espresso,” both of which 90 Minutes handles nicely.
The space itself is a little small, and at first we were taken aback by the limited seating options. Patrons are offered a choice between just two tables or the short bar area in which to sit, watch the game, and sip on a beverage. Our advice? Sit at the bar. You might get a chance to chat with Jose or with some of the other patrons who, drawn together by a love of Fútbol, are friendlier and more easy going than those same people might be at a different venue.
Despite the name, 90 Minutes is first and foremost a coffee shop. As such, the food menu remains limited to hot or cold sandwiches, salads, some typical breakfast items, and the occasional empanada. Not one for cold food, we almost skipped out on what turned out to be a fantastic handcrafted tuna sandwich. It’s all about making it with love, we’re told. That and good bread.
From what we hear, the espresso will remain strong and the juices fresh even after all the World Cup frenzy has finished. Hard core soccer fans need not fear though — a liquor license is in the works, so a frosty beer could be your trusted companion even if Manchester United lets you down.
90 Minutes is located at 1824 Columbia Road, NW near 18th Street
