The Washington region seems to be getting its fair share of odd-ball bank robbers these days. Just a few months ago we had the cell phone bandit, who would calmly chat away on her phone as she held up area banks. And now, according to WJLA, we have a woman that uses wigs and other accessories — the “Wig Lady” — to impersonate bank customers and liberate them from the funds. To really make this trend complete, we could use a roving band of surfers dressed as ex-presidents and holding up banks to fund their never-ending summers — and the dashing Keanu Reeves to stop them. Yes, DCist loved “Point Break.”
Fenty Ahead in Poll: Just weeks before the September 12 Democratic primary, mayoral contender Adrian Fenty leads competitor Linda Cropp by a slim margin, reported the Post yesterday. In a poll of potential District voters, the Post found that Fenty’s 39 percent slightly bests Cropp’s 31 percent, putting ahead in what has been a neck-in-neck race to date. In other findings, the Post reported that Councilmember VIncent Gray (D-Ward 7) is leading Kathy Patterson (D-Ward 3) in the race for council chair and that D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams’ approval ratings have fallen to 54 percent, with black voters expressing most disapproval with his tenure.
Date of District Primary Remains Unchanged: An attempt to move up the date of the D.C. Democratic primary to highlight the city’s lack of voting rights has failed again, writes WTOP. District activists tried to convince party officials over the weekend to allow them to host the first primary in the nation in 2008, but their efforts were once again rebuffed.
Parking Rates Increase: According to WJLA, the median price of all-day parking in the District has crept up to $14, an increase of 50 cents over last year. The increase is attributed to increased demand caused by the creation of jobs in the District — some 28,000 from 2001 to 2005. By comparison, all-day parking in New York and Boston fell by $1 this year.
