So, who took place in yesterday’s National Night Out? I have to admit that a combination of the heat and roundup duties kept me from joining my neighbors and local police officers in the barbeque and walk of the area that took place last night. But surely some of you participated in your own neighborhoods’ Night Out events. How was it?
Area Survives Heat, For Now: Today’s Post covers the heatwave in the Metro section’s signature lengthy-byline weather story style. We haven’t yet broken too many temperature records (although everyone’s got high hopes for today), but demand for electricity has hit an all-time peak. The quoted utility representatives say that everything’s fine — and so far it seems that it has been, with the only cited power outage occurring at a juvenile detention facility. Still, we’re keeping our fingers crossed and our thermostats up.
No FEMA Dollars For NoVa: Sorry Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax — you’re simply too rich. The Post reports that FEMA has denied a request by Virginia for assistance to those counties. The emergency in question consisted of heavy rains and flooding from a late June storm. As one might expect, county officials are upset with the decision, saying that despite their residents’ high median incomes, the affected include poor families that need the sort of help that local government cannot provide.
Tomb Of The Unknowns Weighs Repair Options: We have to confess that most of our post-elementary school trips to Arlington Cemetery have been the result of accidentally wandering onto the blue line. It is nice, however, to know that the cemetery’s inspiring monuments are there, should we ever get our act together and visit them. But WJLA brings word that this can’t be taken for granted: apparently slowly growing cracks — the result of the marble’s dynamite-related provenance — are threatening the Tomb of the Unknown. The cemetery is now seeking public feedback on how to deal with the problem. Patching, replacement and simply doing nothing are all options being considered.
