All week you’ve been saying “Is it Friday yet?”. Good news: it’s Friday! Expect the sweltering heat to take a bit of a hiatus, with our temperatures today slated to drop into the low 90s, with isolated thunderstorms into the evening. How does the weekend look? Saturday and Sunday will vacillate between partly sunny and partly cloudy, according to Weather.com, with highs in the low 90s and high 80s. Sounds lovely, compared to the feels-like-110-degrees of the past few days.
Lawyer Stabbed in NW:Robert Wone, a 32-year-old lawyer, was stabbed and killed in the 1500 block of Swann Street NW, on the edge of Dupont Circle, three blocks south of U Street Wednesday night. Wone was general counsel to Radio Free Asia, a non-profit that broadcasts to Asian counties who do not have free media, and had been an associate at the law firm Covington & Burling. Though Wone is from Oakton, he was staying at a friend’s place where he opted to stay the night after working late. As noted in the Post, Wone was discovered around 11:45 p.m Wednesday night; police say he was stabbed three times in the chest with a butcher knife. WTOP notes that a $25,000 reward is being offered by police for the arrest and conviction of Wone’s killer.
Your A/C May Lead to a Rebate:If you have an energy-friendly window air conditioning unit purchased no later earlier than June 1 2006, or are looking at buying one by May 30, 2007, good news: you’re eligible for a $50 rebate from the D.C. Department of Environment, according to NBC4. The rebate is for all Energy Star-rated window air conditioners. There are also $150 rebates on Energy Star washing machines and $100 rebates on refrigerators. A dated sales receipt must be mailed in with the rebate form: more information can be found at www.dceo.dc.gov.
Diplomats Above Parking Law:This issue comes up every once in awhile: diplomats don’t have to pay their parking tickets. What hasn’t always been clear is just how much of a cash cow those tickets could be for the District: since 2001, more than $250,000 of parking tickets have gone unpaid, according to WTOP. In 2005 alone, $79,890, or 971 tickets, were accumulated and left unpaid by diplomats. The biggest offender in 2005? Cameroon, with 78 tickets totalling $5,855.
