Good morning, Washington. You should check out DCMatt’s photos of last night’s lightning. The flashes prompted me to race home from a happy hour, hoping to escape what seemed like an inevitable deluge — but the downpour never came. And, looking at the forecast, it seems that it’s not about to: the weather should continue to be pleasant through the end of the week.
VA Loses More Veteran Data: It’s happened again. WTOP reports that the Veterans’ Affairs Department has accidentally placed 38,000 more veterans at risk for identity theft. This time the data loss is the result of a subcontractor misplacing a computer. The news is, of course, only the latest revelation in a string of recent data losses facing the agency. 26.5 million veterans’ information was lost (and subsequently recovered) back in May; 16,000 additional veterans’ data was lost in Indianapolis and Minneapolis in the last month, according to WTOP.
Bats Lead To Girl Scout Rabies Scare: NBC4 brings word of the health measures being put into place in response to sightings of bats in one of a Leesburg Girl Scout camp’s buildings. Nobody has been bitten, and the bats that have been captured have all tested negative. Still, officials are suggesting that hundreds of girls receive rabies vaccinations. Better safe than sorry, we suppose, but this DCist can’t help but think back to a relatively bat-filled childhood in the Boy Scouts that was still, miraculously, rabies-free. So far as I know, anyway.
Police Face Roadblock In Wone Murder: Last week, David Wone was stabbed to death in a townhouse near Dupont Circle. A lawyer for Free Radio Asia, Wone had been staying with acquaintances instead of going home after a late night of work. But WUSA reports that the ensuing investigation has run into problems: at least two of the three other men present in the house at the time have retained lawyers rather than speaking with police. And there may have been fourth person present in the house — police aren’t sure. We wouldn’t want to question anyone’s right to counsel, but given these setbacks in the investigation, it’s difficult to avoid wondering whether the situation may be more complex than the straightforward robbery-gone-wrong that initial reports seemed to indicate.
Briefly Noted: Teacher’s Union president convicted of embezzlement may have sentenced reduced in return for cooperation… Engraving employee faces charges of theft… Gunfire exchanged outside Market Lounge… Air Force Memorial finishes first of three spires… Retailers liked Va. sales tax holiday… “And he shall be Livan” (but he’ll be doing it elsewhere)…
This Day In DCist: One year ago we noted Peter Jennings’ passing and discussed the DCSEC’s efforts to gather citizen input into the stadium design.
