FRIDAY:
>> We don’t usually hype big studio movies in the Picks, but when faced with a certain kind of reptile on a specific form of transportation — there’s not much you can do but cross your fingers it doesn’t turn out to suck and jump on the hype train (err, plane). More specifically, literally dozens of local D-list Internet celebrities will be attending the 10:10 p.m. screening of Snakes on a Plane at the Regal Cinemas at Gallery Place, in what could be the most exciting geek rumble the city has ever seen. Witness loyal Fark commenters face off against the DCeiver/Governess/Zunta-led kabal at RFD starting around 8 p.m., then follow the action as the two groups stare each other down on opposite sides of 7th Street as they make their way to the theater, all the while glued to their Treos in an effort to sabotage one another’s most vital resources. Also, what are the odds at least one person in this group shows up dressed in a snake costume?
>> Start strong with a Helicopter, move into the Coindrop, ease it down with an Applejack and finish up with a Windmill. And do it all with a paintbrush. The District of Columbia Arts Center will have an opening reception tonight for The Document, an exhibit featuring photographs and video of four breakdancing artists as they bust-a-move and fill a canvas, Pollack style. The previews on the Web site are pretty awesome, and we’re going to bring our boom boxes in hopes they’ll have a do-it-yourself station set up for the rest of us. 7 to 9 p.m. 2438 18th Street, N.W. Free. (Heather Goss)
SATURDAY:
>> The Wolf Trap Opera Company concludes its season with Mozart’s comic opera The Marriage of Figaro. This performance will be in the Filene Center, the indoor-outdoor theater at Wolf Trap. If the weather is good, the lawn (where the cheapest tickets, $18, put you) is a nice place to have a picnic and hear some opera. Take along your mosquito repellent. Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. Seats in the theater go up to $56. (Charles Downey)
>> It’s your last chance of the summer to get in on the free White House Summer Gardens tour. The tour goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and includes the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, the Rose Garden, the Children’s Garden and the South Lawn of the White House. The National Park Service will distribute free, timed tickets (first-come, first-served) at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion located at 15th and E Streets beginning at 8 a.m.
SUNDAY:
Like our mothers taught us, we’re reluctant to take candy from anyone who doesn’t have a proper Web site, but we hear there’s a new gallery in town with a veritable sugar factory full of visual and performance art. Hospital for Horses and Dogs (seriously, that’s the name) in Shaw is hosting a grand opening party where live music, videos, DJs, and battling MCs will be performing in and around new space, not to mention the, you know, art on the walls. The “skaters welcome” note on our invitation leaves us dubious, but for now we’ll (cringe and) point you to their temporary MySpace page for more information. 7 p.m. 1327 Naylor Court NW. Free.
