Good morning, Washington. This being the town that it is, we don’t have to tell you what today is. Pull the lever, push the button or mark the scantron form — do whatever you’ve got to do, but make sure you make yourself heard. And for those of you who like to wait until the last minute, here’s how to find your polling place in Virginia, Maryland and the District. You might also find WTOP’s list list of poll hours and ID requirements useful.
Last Minute Campaigning: The Post reports on the waning hours of the ’06 campaign season. The few area races that weren’t too close to call seem to be getting tighter, and both parties have called in their big guns: Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Rudy Giuliani have all been in the area making the case for their respective parties. Aside from that, there isn’t much to report — well, other than a few choice quotes from the electorate. Quoth one Allen supporter: “I like to deer hunt, and I like his views”. We hope that the political judgments you make today are equally nuanced.
Voter Suppression Hits Virginia: WTOP reports the area’s first truly dirty campaign tricks that we’ve heard about: some voters are being called and threatened with arrest if they come to the polls. Fortunately, the D.C. area seems to have mostly been spared the robocalling predations of the NRCC — relatively speaking, anyway. Still, if someone calls you up and tells you something unexpected about the election, you probably ought to ignore them — or at least check the information against a reputable source. Like a blog.
Loudoun County Gets Indoor Plumbing: Admittedly, not its first indoor plumbing. Still, we find it amazing that it’s taken this long for America’s richest suburb to provide basic sanitation to some of its citizens. But as WUSA reports, the situation should be remedied shortly, as the town of Willisville will finally get a sanitation plant.
